Despite the sustained strengthening in the Australian labour market, retail sales have been unusually weak in recent months. Admittedly, some of this weakness can be explained by weak price pressures. Nevertheless, households are clearly struggling under the weight of weak wage growth, rising utility prices and record high household debt. We expect consumption growth to slow from 2.6% in the second quarter to 2.0% next year.
