The fall of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad last weekend is a geopolitical blow to Russia, but has been warmly welcomed by many others. Turkey, in particular, could benefit from more influence in the region, and from reconstruction efforts. Elsewhere, discussions this week around European NATO members raising their defence spending target wouldn’t change much for some countries in Central and Eastern Europe given that they are already among the highest spenders – but fiscal positions in Romania and Hungary could be increasingly stretched.
