The renewed violence in eastern Ukraine, the imposition of fresh sanctions by the US and the threat of further moves by the EU have weighed on Russian equities. But the recent falls haven’t been as large as those seen during previous bouts of tensions. Moreover, the spillovers from the crisis to the rest of the region have been limited. Indeed, Turkish equities and the lira have posted strong gains.
