The events of the past two weeks have called into question whether the US is severing ties not just with adversaries such as China but also allies, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union. This would radically alter the shape of the fractured global economy. Thinking through what this would mean in practice – and the costs incurred by both the US and its allies – is perhaps the best reason to think that the US bloc will hold together.
