Emerging Europe Weekly: Ukraine ceasefire talks, Romania’s political risks

The US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine has been met with a mixed response in Russia, with President Putin saying that he “supports the idea” but that it needs “serious reworking”. Achieving a ceasefire would be a significant moment but have only limited economic implications. The bigger impact would come from a formal peace deal to end the war, but that's likely to take much longer. Elsewhere, the decision by Romanian authorities to ban far-right frontrunner Călin Georgescu from taking part in the presidential election lowers the risk of an abrupt shift in foreign policy, but raises questions about the democratic process. And the political challenges facing the country won’t disappear.
