Will we see a turn to austerity in EMs?

Governments in Brazil and South Africa have outlined plans for large multi-year fiscal squeezes from 2021, which will hold back their economic recoveries and are likely to be politically untenable over a sustained length of time. While a few other countries might also go down this route, austerity is likely to be the exception rather than the norm in the emerging world.
