MENA Weekly: Saudi-US relations already warming under Trump

Relations between Saudi Arabia and the US already appear to be on a stronger footing during Donald Trump’s first few days in office, adding to signs that it’s drift towards China is over. The Kingdom has pledged bumper investment into and imports from the US, which should boost hopes of reaching a security pact. And Trump appears to be leaving the door open to Saudi Arabia to reassert its influence in the Middle East – which it already seems to be doing in Lebanon and Syria. That being said, Saudi policymakers will be keeping a close eye on Trump’s energy policy and whether a future of lower oil prices forces them to tighten fiscal policy more aggressively.
