India’s government appoints new RBI governor

India’s government has just appointed Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will replace the Shaktikanta Das following six years at the helm. The announcement comes as something of a surprise – though Mr Das’s term was due to end this week, it was widely assumed that it would be renewed for at least another year. The appointment of Mr Malhotra could set a new direction for the RBI.
