Following the collapse of Michel Barnier’s administration, there is no realistic prospect of a stable government being formed that could address France’s fiscal problems. There is a risk that the current deadlock drags on and that the next legislative elections don’t solve the problem. Next week, we expect the ECB to cut interest rates by 25bp and signal that monetary policy will shift to a more neutral setting before long.
