South Africa’s mining sector has been a struggling part of the economy for some time and, while easing logistical and electricity constraints will provide some relief, weaker commodity prices in the coming years will hold back any recovery. The sector needs reforms ranging from more efficient regulation, improved security and better access to skilled labour. If the government can deliver these, the sector may get the investment needed for a more significant recovery.
