France’s new prime minister, Michel Barnier, will have his work cut out trying to pass a budget that will bring the deficit down to levels acceptable to the European Commission. Meanwhile, the latest euro-zone GDP data suggest that domestic demand was even more sluggish than we had expected. They provide further justification for the 25bp rate cut which the ECB seems sure to deliver next week.
