The PBOC’s support of the renminbi against a strengthening dollar is resulting in a trade-weighted appreciation of the currency. This risks eroding Chinese export competitiveness and has a disinflationary impact. But, for now at least, the PBOC appears to have concluded that allowing the renminbi to weaken would be even more risky.
