Saudi Arabia chooses fiscal squeeze rather than devaluation

The fresh drop in oil prices has once again prompted speculation that Saudi Arabia will follow other major oil producers and devalue its currency. But we think this will only be used as a last resort. Indeed, the recently announced budget for this year has only reinforced our long-held view that tighter fiscal policy will be relied upon to undertake the adjustment to cheap oil.
