The apparent re-emergence of political risk in a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the past couple of months has led some commentators to question the region’s longer-term growth prospects. But as we explain in this Watch, given the stage of development that most countries in SSA are at, the reality is that political concerns are likely to continue resurfacing for some time to come. The key is to look at whether governance is improving or deteriorating. On this basis, long-term growth prospects remain bright for most countries.
