The decline in the number of marriages in China that was revealed this week isn’t just due to there being fewer eligible people. The rate at which young adults are marrying has halved over the past decade. And since births outside marriage are extremely rare, this doesn’t bode well for government efforts to reverse the decline in the fertility rate.
Meanwhile, the government appears to be stepping up support for property developers. We expect this to result in the first annual rise in property sales since 2021.
