The renewed weakness in the housing market and likelihood that mortgage interest cost inflation will soon ease are reasons to expect core inflation to trend lower in the coming months. Next week, the Bank of Canada’s new forecasts may show that it thinks GDP has already fallen below potential, although the Bank will probably still present a relatively hawkish policy statement.
