The benefits and limitations of a “bad bank”

The creation of a “bad bank” in India - for which plans were briefly discussed in the Budget announcement - would help restructure the loans of the most heavily-indebted firms and facilitate a clean-up of the balance sheets of commercial banks. But the banking sector is likely to continue struggling in the absence of major capital injections and greater private participation.
