The lockdowns implemented at the end of last year did not lead to another surge in bank lending, probably because they were less strict and more focused on limiting social activity. But if lockdowns are extended or made more draconian, firms’ demand for government-guaranteed loans to replace lost revenues might rise. The new more generous TLTROs should help to keep credit flowing to firms that need it.
