The proposed US tariffs on imports of Chinese goods could have knock-on effects on other EMs, especially in East Asia, via supply chains. And countries such as Turkey are vulnerable to a deterioration in risk appetite resulting from escalating trade tensions, even though they’re not exposed to the actual tariffs. EMs would be the big losers in the event of a more marked lurch towards protectionism, but the latest measures themselves are unlikely to have much impact on overall emerging market exports.
