July’s activity data will do little to ease concerns about the outlook for Russia’s economy. Industrial production accelerated a little and agricultural production strengthened on the back of this year’s good harvest. But retail sales remain extremely weak and there are signs that investment has started to turn down once again. What’s more, all of this predates the latest round of sanctions from the US and Europe.
