The recent sharp falls in imports of coal by China and consumption of coal in the US are just the latest evidence that environmental measures enacted over the last year have begun to reduce demand in some major consumers. What’s more, whilst the tensions in Ukraine have currently put a premium in the price of European coal, in the longer term, slow economic growth and a focus on renewable energy is likely to put downward pressure here too.
