Despite glimmers of a revival in production, the mood among businesses across most sectors and regions has darkened due to shrinking real incomes and weak domestic demand, with the low level of confidence more consistent with a shrinking economy. This supports our non-consensus view that the economy will struggle to cope with the downturn in the energy sector this year, which the Bank of Canada warned recently is far from over.
