Better news from China only a reprieve

The rebound we expect in China over the next few quarters should come as a relief to Australian policymakers and many investors. But long-run prospects for iron ore demand, which makes up more than half of Australia’s exports to China, remain gloomy. The outlook for sectors such as tourism that benefit from Chinese household spending is brighter. But hopes this can make up for the slowdown in commodity demand are misplaced.
