A fall in mortgage rates from recent 20-year highs helped home purchase applications rise for the first time in eight months in November. However, while we expect mortgage rates to continue to trend lower over the next year, we doubt that will provide much additional support to demand. Economic headwinds, falling house prices and a tightening in credit conditions all mean activity will remain subdued next year.
