With the disinflationary trend broadening out and the unemployment rate rising, recent comments from Fed officials suggest that the FOMC is on track to cut interest rates in September. While the statement next week will be altered somewhat to reflect the growing likelihood of a cut at the following meeting, we suspect Chair Jerome Powell will wait until the Jackson Hole Symposium in August to tee up the move more explicitly.
