Gas price ceiling, new year forecasts

The ceiling on gas prices agreed in principle by the EU this week is unlikely to have any practical impact. The big picture is that gas prices look set to remain very high next year. The key release over the next two weeks will be December's euro-zone consumer prices data, which we expect to show a decline in headline inflation but a still-strong rate of core inflation.
