China Merchandise Trade (Sep. 2024)

Export growth slowed last month but remained resilient, with volumes still rising at a double-digit pace. We think shipments will stay strong in the near term, supported by gains in export competitiveness. Further ahead, though, growing trade barriers are likely to become an increasing constraint. Import volumes fell last month, but they are likely to rebound in the short run as faster fiscal spending drives up demand for industrial commodities.
