China: US chip controls tightened, China retaliates

Updated US export controls released this week will further restrict China’s access to advanced chipmaking technology, but significant loopholes remain. China retaliated immediately with exports bans on "critical minerals" – a foretaste perhaps of how it will respond to future tariffs. The focus next week will be on the Central Economic Work Conference. Some are hoping (again) for details of stimulus. But this isn't a forum for policy announcements. At best we may learn something about the plans that are agreed in the CEWC over the weeks that follow.
