Global Drop-In: Are the US and Europe at risk of recession?

Just one disappointing US data release has been enough to spark recession fears of late, while headlines are screaming that Germany’s economy is facing its second recession in two years. But how can investors accurately gauge the level of economic risk facing these economies?

Our Economic Momentum Indicators (EMI) have been designed to give investors the analytical tools to assess clearly and quickly the degree of recession risk across advanced economies, including the US and euro-zone. In this special briefing, EMI lead and Deputy Chief Global Economist Simon MacAdam will introduce the indicators and show how those recession risks compare.

He will be joined by Chief North America Economist Paul Ashworth and Chief Europe Economist Andrew Kenningham to answer your questions on whether the US and European economies are heading for recession and what more policymakers will do to counter this risk. During this 20-minute briefing, the team will be answering your questions as they address key issues, including:

  • Whether and where the Economic Momentum Indicators are flashing recession;
  •  Why recession risks appear highest in North America;
  • Why Germany faces stagnation rather than outright recession.
