The Autumn Statement took the Conservatives’ planned path for departmental spending another stepcloser to Labour’s manifesto plans. Admittedly, the overall fiscal consolidation this parliament is set tobe bigger than the Conservatives planned before the election. However, if the past five years areanything to go by, the Chancellor is likely to relax his plans further as the parliament progresses.
