The main culprit for the UK’s huge current account deficit is the recent deterioration in the UK’s investment income balance. While we expect some of this to be cyclical, we doubt that we will see a return to the strong income surpluses seen in the 2000s. So to return the current account to a more sustainable level, there will have to be a significant improvement in the trade balance – suggesting that the pound needs to fall much further.
