Rumours have circulated again that Egypt is seeking a deal with the IMF and, as we argue in this Watch, an agreement is now looking more likely than at any point in the past five years. A financing package would help to plug the holes in Egypt’s balance of payments and boost the country’s medium-term growth prospects, but in the near-term it will mean more fiscal austerity and further weakness in the pound.
