In spite of the backdrop of the recent recovery in oil prices, which broke through US$50pb today for the first time this year, speculation has mounted that Saudi Arabia will devalue its currency. We maintain our long-held view that policymakers will rely on tighter fiscal policy to undertake the adjustment to cheap oil. Devaluation will only be used as a last resort.
