Brazil’s markets look too sanguine on political risk

The rally in Brazilian markets this week on polls showing a rise in support for right-wing presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro suggests that the political risk premium being priced in has declined sharply. Given how tight the presidential race is and the scale of the challenge facing whoever wins Sunday’s vote, that looks sanguine. As a result, the gains seen this week are unlikely to be sustained.
