India’s two new schemes aimed at reducing gold imports, due to be rolled out next month, are likely to have mixed results. The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme’s easy accessibility and more transparent returns make it more likely to succeed than the Gold Monetisation Scheme. But the big picture is that, even with moderate success, the schemes should help to ensure that the current account position remains sustainable.
