French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron last night confirmed that he intends to cut overall government spending, boost public investment and overhaul the labour market. These are all long overdue and would help to revive France’s economic prospects. But since French politicians have tried and failed to do this before, a degree of caution is warranted.
