The breakdown of Q4 GDP data in Central and South Eastern Europe showed encouraging (albeit tentative) signs of an improvement in consumer spending. By contrast, exports were extremely weak. Leading indicators suggest that growth has probably accelerated in Q1, but we suspect that the recovery will remain slow going.
