Amid the recent sharp contractions in output from South Africa’s manufacturing and mining sectors, the better-than-expected performance from the retail sector comes as welcome news. But given that inflation remains high and labour market conditions remain tough, the outlook for consumer spending as a whole is for a steady but not spectacular performance over the coming months.
