South Africa’s current account deficit narrowed slightly in Q1, helping to ease some of the near-term pressure on the rand. But the fact that the deficit is being funded in large part by short-term inflows of capital means that external financing risks persist. The shortfall is one of several reasons why we expect the Reserve Bank to keep rates on hold for the time being, despite the weakness of economic growth.
