The 0.23% m/m increase in core CPI in December appears consistent with a below-target 0.14% m/m increase in the Fed’s preferred core PCE deflator measure. Although that would leave core PCE inflation unchanged at 2.8%, there is scope for a more marked decline in the annual rate in January, assuming the 0.5% gain from last year isn’t repeated.
