US: Existing Home Sales (Dec. 2024)

The small rise in existing home sales in December reflects deals that came together in September and October, when mortgage rates hit a nadir of 6.2%, getting across the line.  Given the recent selloff on the bond market, which has driven mortgage rates back above 7%, this gain should be reversed over the next month or so, in line with our forecast that 2025 will be another tough year for the housing market.
