Modi in Moscow: old friends, new context

Prime Minister Modi’s trip to Moscow next week will irk the West, but it should be read as a sign of India seeking to reap economic gains from its non-aligned status rather than an effort to position itself any closer to China and its geopolitical allies. Indeed, India’s amiability towards Russia and hostility towards China is nothing new. And, in any case, the political and economic benefits mean we think India would side with the West if push came to shove.
