Bond index inclusion, rupee settlement mechanism

If media reports are to be believed, Indian local-currency bonds are on the cusp of being included in major bond indices for the first time. That could lead to a pick up in foreign inflows, but domestic monetary policy will remain the key driver of the local bond market. Meanwhile, we aren’t convinced that the government’s call for local banks to adopt the new rupee settlement mechanism will be heeded.
