The Cold War was defined by geopolitical blocs – the Soviet or Eastern bloc against the Western bloc. Geopolitics retreated with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The period from the early-1990s to the early-2010s was instead an era of globalisation: most countries were opening their economies and integrating their markets for goods and services. But geopolitics has since returned to reshape global economic and financial relationships.
