Comparing the ECB’s deposit rate to estimates of its equilibrium level suggests that monetary policy will soon be only slightly restrictive. But there is a huge amount of uncertainty around these estimates. With the economy struggling and underlying price pressures likely to decline, we forecast that the Bank will cut the deposit rate to 1.5% later this year.
