South Africa Interest Rate Announcement (May)

The South African Reserve Bank’s decision to leave the repo rate unchanged at 8.25% was never in doubt. Governor Kganyago said as little about the election as was possible, but the MPC will be concerned about the market reaction to the early results that are trickling in. And the outcome of post-election coalition talks will play a key role in determining when and how far interest rates can be lowered.
