Signs of scarring in South Africa’s labour market

South Africa’s unemployment rate has dropped back over the past year or so but it remains far above its pre-pandemic level. The rise in long-term unemployment, which has its roots in both cyclical and structural factors, is particularly worrying and could ultimately dampen South Africa’s already-weak potential GDP growth even further.
