Drop-In: South Africa Budget – Are the public finances really on the mend?

South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will be in a cheerful mood when he delivers the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on 30th October; the budget deficit has narrowed and the government’s borrowing costs have fallen sharply.

Even so, investors will be closely watching for signs that the new Government of National Unity is really committed to fiscal consolidation. Will Minister Godongwana deliver?
