Fannie, Freddie and financial repression

The proposed winding down of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-owned mortgage finance companies, is normally framed in terms of protecting taxpayers from having to pick up the tab in the event of another housing collapse. Alternatively, however, eliminating the government-sponsored enterprises could also be considered a form of financial repression.
