Downgrade, default or both?

Even if the politicians finally get their act together and agree a deficit reduction package, the resulting spending cuts may not be large enough to appease the credit rating agencies. As such, we wouldn't be surprised to see America lose its AAA credit rating as soon as this week. Thankfully, the fallout should be smaller than many fear. And the much more dangerous threat of an actual debt default will be avoided.
